Late Night Swim

After this morning's workout, I pushed myself a little bit too much with this evening's workout. I changed the warmup and cool down routine, but I shouldn't have. Each of the warmups should help with a specific part of my stroke and it's important to do the same thing in working out unless there is a good reason to do otherwise. My times probably aren't bad given that I have been doing a fair amount of training and tonight's slow 200m times were better a week ago. I'm trending upwards. Or am I t… Continue

Clinic in Boston

Just thought I would give everyone an update.

I went to Boston today and I am still here. My FEV1 was 8% which is 2% down from what it was 2 weeks ago. The team and I decided that I should stay for a little "tune-up", just to maybe help me gain some of the weight back that I have lost throughout the whole regection process. I will also have a chance to talk to a phycologist (sp?) to help me sort out all of the feeling I have been overwhelmed with. I will also get the chance to see someone from… Continue

Introducing Holly as new Cafe Administrator....& New Women Issues & Body Image Groups!

Hello TC Family!

I hope this memo finds you in great and improving health..

Great news! Holly Werlein (Holdol) has become a cafe administrator! Holly and I have had a few lengthy conversations about the cafe and it's mission and vision.. and let me just say that you can expect to be impressed with her passion for transplantation and increasing awareness.

And, she could not have made herself available as an admin soon enough, because secretly, I was really hoping for someone like her to get in… Continue

Early Morning Bike Ride

A few nights of swimming seems to have a streamline effect on my legs. Since I was up at 6am, I went for an early ride. I had ideal weather and traffic conditions. The overcast weather kept people off the road. I concentrated on the two 5K splits again within the perfect 20k (20.15). My 5k times were 8.18 and 8.37. I rode the course in approximately 39.30, almost as good as my previous best. I stayed in the saddle on the climbs and ascended quickly because I had enough momentum starting the clim… Continue

July 7th: Different Night - Same Workout

I did a total of 1,000 meters with the same warmups. I improved on my splits from last night. I concentrated on two things. On the 50m splits, I focused on greater arm movement. My arms were "shorter" and I tried to stay on top of the water. I finally broke a 40 second barrier. After the turns on the 200m splits, I focused on staying on top of the water with short strokes before settling into the longer strokes and glides. I didn't keep my head down tonight as well as I did the night before. It… Continue

Maryland Doctors Set Kidney Transplant Record

Associated Press
July 7, 2009

BALTIMORE - A Maryland hospital surgeon is saying he and doctors in three other hospitals have completed what is believed to be the largest series of kidney paired donation procedures ever undertaken.

Dr. Robert Montgomery of Johns Hopkins Hospital, along with donors and recipients, will give details of the groundbreaking feat during a news conference Tuesday in the… Continue

I've been given the green light! I can have that life-saving transplant.... but need further tests...

Today I returned to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. I had been 3 weeks prior, had 8 viles of blood taken and underwent a Nuclear Kidney Function test (to see how well my kidneys are working)

Today I had to have some more tests, to see if I would be compatible for another Heart Transplant. I had another 8 viles of blood taken, ECG, Echo, X-Ray and underwent an Exercise stress test. That was horrible, I am terribly clostrophobic anyway but when they put the breathing mask on me which… Continue

HR 1458/S 565.

The House of Representatives has included extending immunosuppressive drug coverage for kidney transplants in their draft health care reform bill. While this is a tremendous step, it does not ensure passage. We must now keep up support for the provisions in the final House Bill and encourage the Senate to include it in their bill.

The language included is from HR 1458/S 565. This bill would provide coverage for immunosuppressive drugs for kidney patients for the life of the organ. In addition,… Continue

1,000m Swim Special - July 6th

The 1,000 meter special. I do 50m warmup, 50m one-arm, 50m board kick w/o fins, 50m with fins (concentrating on keeping my head down … it's starting to pay off), and 50m board/fin combination followed by a timed 200m then 50m freestyle, then repeat cycle. On the timed intervals tonight, I really tried to stay smooth and yesterday's work in the ultralong Hansen Dam gave a me a good feel for what to do with my arms under the water. I feel like I didn't work too hard, yet I swam the first 200m in 3… Continue
