Fundraisers that we have done are dances... we do an annual dance. Quarter auctions, & this year we are doing a Championship Day Football Party. I would be glad to give details on any of these if anyone is interested!!

Two of my daughters received heart transplants. They're now 12 and 14. They hope to attend the World Transplant Games in Australia. I look forward to reading about fundraising ideas, as it's so expensive to attend. The girls really want to go, though. The local Air Force Base is giving approval for us to do a fundraiser and a local order of Rainbow Girls wishes to sponsor the girls. We will need a lot more, though, as it takes more than $1,300 each to travel there, costs associated.... Hugs, Susan Friesen, Santa Maria, CA

What a great group! We work with patients daily who are fundraising on some level, whether it is pre or post-transplant. Fundraising is a vital, albeit sometimes intimidating, process! If you think the National Foundation for Transplants can be of assistance to you, please don't hesitate to contact me.

help! need ideas for fund-raising...my Financial Coordinator at Duke tells us that I will need approx. $12,000 up front (insurance covers 100% of surg, but it's the lodging/meals/med co-pays we'll have to have this money for...we also have a mortgage/cost of living to be worried about while we're living near Duke for two months post-transplant... my hubby and i welcome ANY suggestions for raising this kind of money within roughly 3 months or so til , hopefully, i'll be "activated"....thanks!!

Team Northwest is in one of the direct service areas of the NKF, with no affiliate. If you want to set up something like the firstgiving site, check with your affiliate.

For the 2008 games, Team Northwest members used firstgiving.com to raise money online by emailing their page link to friends and family. There were some people who did really well. I understand the NKF will not be using firstgiving again, but haven't heard who they will be using.

Mary Jo, a lot of people hate asking for things... especially monetary donations. Sometimes you can go about that by mearly mentioning what you are doing when people bring it up in situations. For example:

Donator: "Mary Jo, how have you been, what have you been up to lately?"
MJ: "Oh, I am so busy right now planning Fundraiser A to help out Generic Charity."
D: Some random thoughts on the charity or general follow up question about event.
MJ: explanation
D: "That sounds like fun, how can I help?"

That approach has been effective for others working with me as a donor. I think it is a great plan. I plan to try it for the 2010 games. I donated to an e-mail request for support for a 150-mile Multiple Sclerosis Foundation bike ride. Afterward I appreciated a detailed narrative about the eventwritten by the pereson I helped sponsor and a report on the successful fund raising efforts. Great plan.

For the 2008 games, when I wanted people to purchase grocery store gift cards, I distributed gift card order forms with my name on them already and with stamped and addressed envelopes to send the orders to NKF of Ohio for processing. Making fund raising/donation EASY is important in this busy world.

A while back someone I know sent each of her family members and friends self addressed stamped envelopes asking for sponsorship to the tx-games.

She included a note talking about her tx experience and her goals for the games, etc..(kindda like her own brochure).

Then after she came back, she sent those who supported her a thank you note with photos of her competing, medals, etc.

That approach is not for everyone, but it worked for her.
