My husband got a kidney from his daughter one week ago. His pre-op creatinine was 6.38 and today it is 1.0. He was on hemodialysis from July 2008 until 10/2009. I think it is great that you can give him one of your kidneys. The technology is wonderful.. My husband had the surgery on Oct.26 and was home on Oct. 30. HIs donor was out on the 28th.

my husband rcvd a liver transplant 02/20/07, 2 1/2 yrs ago , and wiht no problems during or after whatsoever, now his creatine level( kidney) is at 7.8, his kidney dr suggests dialysis, and we are so scared. after going thru so much and now this, but we are staying positive and i am in the process of seeing if i can be a living donor to him, if i am not we also have a kidney-swap progarm here at our local Methodist hospital where he got his liver transpalnt, where i can give one of my kidneys to someone in need and one of thier family members can give my husband one.

I would like to thank all of you for your replies. I am going to have my daughter read them. She saw Endo yesterday and they worked out a new plan for her to try in order to get things under better control. Unfortunately, if she were to need a transplant and even if I was a match I would not be able to donate since I only have one kidney myself. The same with one of my sisters. We lost our kidney due to different reasons. Lile, you are such a blessing to your sister. Stephanie, I am sending good thoughts and prayers your way for a new kidney. Both of your replies are so close to home for us. I will definitely have my daughter read them. I am so glad that I joined this site. Your support helps me more than I can say. Again thank you. And I will go check out the World Kidney Day Website, thank you Marie-Agnes.

HI Cloyce,
My sister has diabetes since she was 10. At 26, her kidneys began to fail and within 4 short months of the drs finding out that her kidneys were damaged, they failed. She was on dialysis for 3-4 months- the time it took to get her transplant organized and I donated my kidney to her.
I am sorry to hear about your daughter's health issues. My sister had the same issues. She is insulin dependant. Her cholestrol and trig were high which is caused by diabetes. She was put on cholesterol pills to help lower it-- it should be less than 200. Her blood pressure was very high- on pills for that too but in time it takes its toll. This is definitely due to her diabetes as well. Diabetes long term does such damage. When we learned that her kidneys were damaged--- they gave us some "tips" to help out the kidneys..... limit her protein intake.. the kidneys work hard to break down the proteins so if she has less protein- it will help out. no salt- that will help with her pressure. maintain the blood sugars--- any highs or lows are damaging... be strict with monitoring it. Drs dont know how long it takes for the kidneys to fail. We learned in Jan 08 that she was in stage 4 kidney disease- they assured me it would take time for them to fail. but then they failed in May 08- only a fews months afterwards. She was on dialysis a few months- which was terrible. I worked as fast as I could to complete the testing and set everyything for the transplant. Now that she has a new kidney- her diabetes is stable and she has never been healthier.
she is on the waiting list for a pancreas now because since she has a new kidney, she is eligible for a pancreas.

Cloyce--thank you for sharing about your daughter! I have had lupus (a relative of CF) since I was 14 and my first kidney transplant was in 2002 from my brother. I am unfortunately back on the list after losing my new kidney to cardiac arrest from pulmonary hypertension this May. I was told the high triglycerides and such were more of a result of kidney disease so I am not sure about her case! I went years with 20 and 30% function as long as she takes good care of herself! We'll be praying for you both! The American Transplant Association is Chicago has been a wealth of information for our family with great newsletters and research info that is not way above my head! Try them out! Until then we'll be praying a donor comes before she needs it! :-)
