Hi Sherrell, I spoke with you a while back. I have a LVAD for the past 14months. Yesterday was the last day of me being !A status, I am now currently 1B again. Kind of getting discouraged, but thats not usually me. The waiting is getting so hard now.

Jesse is doing wonderful, so much better than I ever dreamed possible. He had a rough start, but he is flying now!

Reading your story is amazing. Unbelievable how fast you get back to "normal", huh?

Thanks, Sherrell.....yes, I have had the occasional pity party but when I feel it coming on, I try to let it run it's course and then I get out of the house!! I am blessed with friends who are really supportive...my kids are too but they do not live close. I have a transplant coordinator who is wonderful...once I get to the point of needing the VAD, he will introduce me to people who have one and I will visit their support group. The longer I can put it off, the more improved the VAD will become. As of now, because I AM in such good shape physically and have such a positive attitude, it is not being discussed as destination therapy but I know that may be what could happen. I nearly died in 2001 with my original episode...so I feel these last few years have been a gift.

Sherrell....your story is an inspiration to me, as mine is very similar. My dilated cardiomyopathy has been on a downward spiral for 2 years but I first became ill in 2001. I am 61 right now. My transplant evaluation was begun Oct. 2, 2008...and all was progressing nicely until a very small breast cancer was discovered. I had a lumpectomy and radiation...and am healed. However, my transplant will have to wait 5 years, until I am declared cured of cancer. I understand why....but it doesn't mean I was not devastated. I sometimes wonder how I can make it. I am not bad enough for a LVAD but it is most likely I will have to have one as a bridge to transplant. Was that ever a possibility for you? At my age, it may be all I am going to get. I want to get to know as many people as I can who have had transplants, I learn something new almost every day.

Profile Information

How are you touched by transplantation?
I am a Recipient
If you are a recipient, what type of transplant did you receive?
Heart
Recipients: In this space, feel free to list those you are grateful to for receiving the Gift of LIfe:
My donor's parents, Larry and Jean and his little girl Sheila met my husband, youngest daughter and me 5 years after my transplant. My donor, Ty, was an artist and a super young man...he was truly loved by his family and friends. He had told his parents his wishes to be a donor if anything happened. When their worse nightmare did happen, they knew what he wanted. I think about him everyday and am thankful I am now close to his family. I designed a pin in his memory which I wear every day and give to recipients and other donor families. Also my family who continue to support me as we learn to live healthy in the world of transplantation, my church family and friends, and my "heart family" too. The staff at Emory on the TX floor as well as the clinic. This is definitely a team "sport".

I work part time for Georgia Transplant Foundation as the Mentor Project Director.
About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
Diagnosis with dilated cardiomyopathy/congestive heart failure at age 38, I experienced sudden cardiac death 1 month later at home with just my children there who called 911. Their expertise in CPR and having a portable defibrillator helped restart my heart. I soon had my own ICD implanted. After living with a failing heart for 7 years, maxed out on the heart medications, spending much time in bed, using a wheelchair, and being in the hospital almost monthly, we decided after much discussion with my medical team it was time to explore the transplant possibility. After my evaluation was complete, I listed on June 13, 2002, became an in-patient on July 19th and received my new heart on August 3rd. My surgery and recovery was textbook. Within 3 weeks I was walking a mile and life was good. I've experienced typical side effects from the medications and a bout with CMV but no major rejection or other issues. I ride my bike, play the organ at church, enjoy RVing with my husband and live a pretty full life. I volunteer with the Donate Life/LifeLInk of Georgia Transplant Advocay Group and share my story whenever I get the opportunity.

Double Anniversary

I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that this month is a double anniversary for me. On the 13th I will be 25 years out from my second kidney transplant. December, 25th will mark 30 years post first kidney transplant. It doesn't seem that its been that long ago,
I will forever think about the families that made the faithful decision that saved my life and the lives of other complete strangers. I do celebrate on the anniversaries but, I also mourn because of the loss that was e…

Thanksgiving Heart

We had a nice quiet thanksgiving, just three of us because the rest of the family live in Oklahoma.... But at 12:04 a.m. on Friday morning, we got the call! It only took us 24 minutes to get dressed, throw some things in a bag, get out of our gated parking area, drive 10 blocks or so, get ticket in the parking garage, park and get into the hospital up on the 7th floor at the nurses station. I think that was record time. Brady was pulling me in the garage trying to make me hurry, but I have arthr…
