I received my transplant on June 8, 2002 at UCSF. Pancreas and Kidney!
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18 and by the time I was 30 I was having a lot of complications as a result of poor diabetes management. At 31 I was total my kidneys were no longer functioning, ended up having to quit work and go on dialysis. I used that time to go back to school and earn my degree. All that time hooked up on dialysis was perfect for getting homework done! I can honestly say that I am so grateful for my experience today, dialysis and all. It all lead me to where I am today, healthy body and a happy spirit. My friends and family supported me through the times I was not so grateful and my path wasn't clear. I'm blessed to have them. There is one person I will never be able to express my gratitude, but I know there is a part of him that will always be with me in more ways than the physical. Enjoy today, it's the only one we can be sure of.
