This is where we get creative with ideas for increasing donor awareness. Should the government, foundations, groups, hospitals, organizations, etc. be doing more? Or, have you ever thought of a new way that might motivate donor sign ups?

I am sorry to hear the show is being cancelled, I liked it and thought it would make more people understand the importance of being a donor. What a shame and I will miss the show.

I am a Recipient

Liver
Recipients: In this space, feel free to list those you are grateful to for receiving the Gift of LIfe:
I have so many people to thank for being here today that I would need another website like this one just for them. So, I'll keep it simple:

TransplantCafe.com is dedicated to:

1. My mom, dad, uncle, brother and Kari without whom I would not have lived through the rough times after transplantation.

2. Dr. Imagawa at UCI Medical Center and the entire 1998 Liver Transplant Team who became and will always be family and without whom I (or my mom) wouldn't have lived through surgery.

3. All donors; living donors, those who register with their state, or country as donors and those who think life for someone else they have never met, when the life of their loved one is taken away.

4. My donors Jack and Ruth for the gift of life at a time when life was taken from them with the sudden death of their son Gary.

5. To you, the transplant recipient for being a great example of the human will to live and showing the world how successful transplantation can be.

6. Lastly, to the world itself which still needs our help to change it's attitude towards donation.
If you are a recipient, what type of donor did you receive your Gift of Life from?
Deceased Donor
If you are a recipient, when did you have your transplant(s)?
March 5, 1998
What is your principal transplant med(s)?

What is your hospital and, or doctor's name, city / state and country?
UCI Medical Center, Orange California.
My transplant and current doctor is Dr. David Imagawa.
What do you do for a living?
Internet Marketing
About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
My name is Nelson. I'm a Liver transplant recipient since 1998. I had to have an emergency life saving liver transplant after I had been prescribed a thyroid medication (by a well meaning doctor) to which I had an allergic reaction causing me fulminate liver failure.

My experience with transplantation was a bit different than with most recipients who unfortunately have to wait a long time to receive their transplant. I had no idea I needed a transplant until after I woke up with a new liver. It was a weird feeling suddenly waking up into a whole new paradigm without prior knowledge of needing a transplant until after transplantation.

Transplantation has brought me a lot of amazing experiences and friendships that I would not want to be without today if it meant not having ever had my transplant. Having a transplant has allowed me to see great places like France for the World Transplant Games in 2003 and many US cities with the US Transplant Games, with more games and travel on the horizon.

It was those experiences and friendships that inspired TransplantCafe.com. It was an idea that evolved from a simple thought to author some sort of "fun things having a transplant will allow you to do more of or faster" type of manual or book. Being an Internet marketer, it was easy to see that "web2.0" and user generated content social networking would serve the transplant community much more.

I hope you'll enjoy the site and make TransplantCafe.com your new home to connect and share your experience with the transplant community and the world!

Nelson

Have you developed New Talents AFTER your transplant? Splash News wants to interview you! $$

Hello everyone!

Recently I was contacted by Laura Johnston, a writer who works for a company called "Splash News and Picture Agency," a worldwide publisher of newsworthy stories.

Laura would like to feature some stories (the more outrageous and 'far out' or extreme the better) of transplant recipients who have developed new talents that they feel were passed on to them from their organ donor.

To have an idea what this is all about,… Continue

Busting Myths and Misconceptions About Organ Donation

Have you ever heard someone say something like "if you're an organ donor and are in a bad accident and in critical condition, doctors will let you die so that they can take your organs for transplant" ?? Or, "oh no, I can't become a donor, because if I do, something horrible may happen to me!" ?

Even some of us who have transplants, may even be guilty of having entertain similar misconceptions before ever needing a transplant.

Many foundations and organizations have tried to bring these myths… Continue

Nelson, Just read the note from Marshall Spencer. It is amazing to know someone now has a gift. This is so great to hear or read.
I have a talk on Thurs. to nurses and my Big Talk is on Fri. night at 6:30 to Donor Families. I actually look forward to this, I'm sure I will be nervous but I can feel it is what I am to do.
Finished my 8k at the Richmond Marathon. It was huge, I heard there were15,000 runners total in the marathon, 1/2 marathon and 8k. I felt like I was in heaven running with my constant companion.. Lifenet had a great group together to support organ donation and we had a good number of people to sign up to be donors. Take care of yourself, AnneK

Lina was told this morning that the surgery would start at 10:30am ... as I am able and if I remember I will provide updates. I just started a page of my own here and will try to do so there.
Best regards,Marshall Spencer

Hey Nelson, Do you ever wonder why we were lucky enough to receive the gift of life? When I woke up from my transplant I knew for the first time in 13yrs. I was well. I could feel my body was better even in the beginning when my body was sore from surgery.. At that point I wept over my wellness, then wept over knowing someone out there lost their child. I think everyday of my gift and always pray to GOD to guide me with what he wants me to do with this special gift. I was asked to speak to a group of nurses in heart failure about my experience. From there I have worked with Lifenet to spread the word. Next Thursday I will be speaking at an event named THE ANGEL TREE. The room will be filled with donor families. I feel this will be the most important talk I will ever give and I hope my words express the gratitude we all feel each day. I will show pictures of the World Games of faces around the world that have been touch by the gift of life. Have you ever given a talk like this.. It seems that maybe this is what I am to do. Share my experience and spread the word. I hope there is more I can do to give back and keep praying for direction. Take care AnneK

Are you kidding! I will never miss a game as long as I am healthy. I was so tired on the Gala Night in Australia, I could hardly stand. I wish I could have stayed up later to hang out with you guys. I will be at the games, how about you. I know the games are in July which seem like a long time away, but time flies. I hope so much you are there. I met so many nice people and look forward to seeing everyone, and this time I will not have jetlag.....Were you tired when you came home? Where do you live? I forgot....I am in Virginia just south of DC. How come you did'nt compete in the games, and will you compete in the US games? What sports.. I will again do the 800m, 1500m, and 5k. Last year I played volleyball, its fun but I like basketball better. The only problem is that our team does'nt have a womens team. I may do a swim, or just something entirely different. I do not want to do anything to hurt my back..... I have decided I may try to run the Boston Marathon if Association will let me in.. I qualified in 1998 in Texas, but never got to run it due to my illness. Some of my avid running friends think I should call Boston, tell them the story and think they may let me in... We will see. If I do get in I may shoot for 2011. It makes me nervous just thinking about it. It will take a lot of work to build up for this and not get injured...I think you are awesome, and hope see you in July... Do you ever have any problems from your transplant? Keep me up to date with you. Who else has joined TransplantCafe that I may have met in Australia?

Ahaha, well my white white skin got me into thinking I should be MJ for Halloween, plus I have this really MJ-like shirt that I got from a costume bin at a camp I go to (I was supposed to return it but I accidentally packed it and didn't realize I had it until I got home). So I told my family I was going to good old Michael for Halloween and my sisters came up with their zombie idea after that. We all think it's going to be great. And yes, we are DEFINITELY going to do the Thriller dance. :) And hopefully I can finish learning the moonwalk...to give the full MJ effect. :D

Hello All! My brother and I underwent surgery in December of 2006. I was in nursing school at the time and managed to slip it in on my Christmas break. Recovery was fast for me and I was amazed to see my brother looking and feeling great within hours of the transplant! When people ask me "so how was it?" I tell them I'd do it again if I could. Since then my husband is back in the Marine Corps and we are in beautiful Hawaii. I work as a nurse and have a beautiful 5 month old daughter.

and yeah, I could use some help rotating my photo - couldn't figure it out :)

We had a nice quiet thanksgiving, just three of us because the rest of the family live in Oklahoma.... But at 12:04 a.m. on Friday morning, we got the call! It only took us 24 minutes to get dressed, throw some things in a bag, get out of our gated parking area, drive 10 blocks or so, get ticket in the parking garage, park and get into the hospital up on the 7th floor at the nurses station. I think that was record time. Brady was pulling me in the garage trying to make me hurry, but I have arthr…
