Profile Information

What is your city / state and country of residence?
Georgia
How are you touched by transplantation?
I am a Recipient, I am a Donor Family Member (related to a loved one whose organs were donated)
Optional for those who donated their Loved One's organs, tissue, or both: in this space, feel free to write anything you want about your Loved One and your experience as a donor:
My cousin Ricky Rodgers "Little Rick" was killed June 6, 2004. Because of me, my aunt donated his organs.
If you are a recipient, what type of transplant did you receive?
Liver
Recipients: In this space, feel free to list those you are grateful to for receiving the Gift of LIfe:
My donor was an 11 year old girl from Arkansas, I don't know anything else about her but not a day goes by where she isnt in my heart. I met a donor mom at the 2004 transplant games who gave me an Arkansas Razorback hog pin. Ever since then, I've worn this pin during races I've ran in honor of my donor.

Dr. Thomas Dodson, my transplant surgeon. I surprised him last year with one of the gold medals I won from the games and gave it to him.

Dr. Louis Elsas, who treated me for Tyrosinemia. I've known him since I was two years old when I was diagnosed. I was very sad to find out he moved to Florida to be at the University of Miami but thankfully am still able to keep in contact. He is like a second father to me.

My mother who has always been my major source of support and caregiver.

Starla (my liver) who has kept me alive for an extra 18 years!
If you are a recipient, what type of donor did you receive your Gift of Life from?
Deceased Donor
If you are a recipient, when did you have your transplant(s)?
I had my evaluation January 28, 1991 and received my new liver July 2, 1991.
What is your principal transplant med(s)?
50mg of Gengraf (Cyclosporine)
Tramadol for arthritis
Taken off Prednisone Aug 19, 2008
What is your hospital and, or doctor's name, city / state and country?
I had my surgery at Children's Health Care of Atlanta, done by Dr. Thomas Dodson. At age 13, I was the 8th child in Georgia to have a liver transplant. My surgery lasted 8 hrs. I am now followed by Dr. Samir Parekh at Emory University.
About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
I was born with Tyrosinemia but because it was so rare, wasn't diagnosed till the age of two. Tyrosinemia is an error in metabolism where the enzymes that you need to break down tyrosine is missing. Since the body isnt able to process the tyrosine, it builds up in the liver and kidney and can cause kidney problems and liver cancer. I lived 13 years of my life on a very strict no protein/tyrosine diet and had to drink this special formula that would allow me to get all my nutrients without the protein. I was always in the hospital for complications related to this. When I was 12, my parents were told the kids with Tyrosinemia were being found to have liver cancer and that I should be checked. I did have cancer as well and this is when we were told I needed a liver transplant.

It has now been 18 years, I've had some issues the last year and half but am hanging in there and will be ok.

Terri,
I posted this in the Welcome Committee forum but I wanted to bring this to your attention since Holly and Nelson are in Australia. I see that we have two new members (named rosemary and sandera) and I personally think that they are scam artists. In the 'fill in the blank' sections regarding transplants they each just say "I will talk later" over and over and over again. Can you please get this checked out? Thanks! :-)

HI PEACH, HOPE YOUR LABS TURN OUT GOOD. I RAN THE SECOND LEG OF THE RELAY. MY OWN TIME WAS 1HR. AND 16 MINUTES. NOT TOO BAD FOR MY FIRST TIME. ONE OF MY PROBLEMS WAS I RAN TOO FAST THE FIRST 2 MILES. I WANTED A PACE OF AROUND 11:30 MILE BUT I RAN IN ABOUT 9:00 MILE, THEN I RAN WITH NOBODY AND IT GOT BORING. SO THE FIRST TIME WAS SUCCESSFUL. TWO MORE MONTHS OF TRAINING BEFORE THE HALF. THAT ONE I AM NERVOUS ABOUT. TALK SOON THANKS FOR ASKING

Palin in book: McCain aides kept me 'bottled up'

The rumors are true, according to Sarah Palin: The McCain-Palin campaign was not a happy family. In Palin's new memoir, "Going Rogue," she confirms reports of tension between her aides and those of the 2008 Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain. The vice presidential candidate confirms that she had wanted to speak on election night, but was denied the chance and says she was kept "bottled up" from reporters during the campaign.
